If you told 23-year-old Angel that one day she’d go on a solo backpacking trip through Asia, she would’ve said, “Asia?! What are you talking about? Why would I do that?”

Time is a great teacher.

Currently, I’m in Vietnam. This place is crazy. I don’t know if it’s 2014 or 1950. The juxtaposition is mind-blowing.

Vietnam Highlights Part 1

1. The infrastructure. The buildings remind me of pez dispensers. Much like the beloved candy, what you want is on top. Once, I had to climb four flights of stairs for tea. Tea! I was surprised how many places (cafes, schools, residences) were multi-level and how few elevators there were. None, to be exact. It struck me how inaccessible the city was to the handicapped.

2. The carb situation. I knew the cuisine would include oodles of rice and noodles. But not baguettes! Not fresh ones sold on every corner for pennies. What was I supposed to do!? Walk by and not experience Vietnamese culture??? So, I ate some bread. Fine, I ate a lot of bread. *Shrugs*

3. The community. I want to live in a place where group massage is normal. Where me and 11 of my closest friends meet at the park to give each other shoulder rubs. That is where I want to live.

4.The work ethic. The streets are popping at 5am. People are hauling stacks of recycled goods on the back of bicycles, wheelbarrowing gravel, and shouldering pounds and pounds of produce. The Vietnamese are hardworking people! Respect.

5. The restaurant decor. You’re in a garage. You’re sitting on tiny stools at plastic tables. There is no air-conditioning. The menu is a piece of paper stuck to the wall. The only luxury is the legendary meal you’re about to eat.

Stay tuned for more highlights from Vietnam. I have much more to share.

Have you been to Vietnam? If not, does the country intrigue you?
