I got served. My friend suckered me into being a vegetarian for 7 days. (Truthfully, she did no suckering but I thought it added color to the story.) I accepted the challenge. I was intrigued by logistics. How can I fulfill my protein needs without eating meat? What am I going to do with that last serving of grilled chicken? If I swallow it but don’t chew, does it still count as eating? This was going to be interesting.
Day 1 started like any other as I blended my protein smoothie and guzzled it down on my way to work. For lunch, I had a salad with avocado squished all up in it. (Avocado makes everything better.)
At 4pm, I started to crave a little sumthin’ sumthin’. My body wanted protein and finding abundant sources would prove to be the real challenge. My protein was limited to whey protein shakes and almonds.
Overall, Day 1 as a vegetarian was a success. However, a trip to the grocery store is mandatory. Brown girl cannot live off whey protein alone.
Other than beans and yogurt, do you have any delicious protein-rich vegetarian ideas for me? I cannot lose these buttery muscles.

You could look into joining a CSA where they deliver the food directly to your house – like Arganica! Ylan’s a member, and I did a trial of it, but with the Falls Church market a few blocks away it didn’t make sense for us to be members of a CSA…

@Nicole. I can’t get to a farmers market because the one I know is 10-2 on Saturdays and I work. What is next best option to getting eggs from the farmer’s market??

@Yvette. Of course, quinoa, thanks for the reminder, I’m going to cook some today. Nut butters are evil – meaning I can’t resist.

Um–chickpeas. And brown rice.

quinoa, black beans, chick peas, lentils, nut butters!

Yes, for protein – chickpeas, lentils and tofu. If you have to do eggs, pleeeease get them from a local farmer’s market. Egg laying chickens have it the WORST (I’ll provide details if you want)! I had some kick ass lentil soup for lunch today, with chickpea crackers. And I can send you instructions on how to cook some non-mushy tofu if you don’t usually cook with it!

@Ween. I think I’m panicking. I completely forgot about eggs. Thank you, love.
