My Spin Class Can’t Be Described

I love to teach. You can find me teaching at Revolve Fitness where I have one of the most popular classes. I’ve gotten good by taking classes from other instructors and learning from them. I love being in the room with an incredible instructor and soaking up their energy and talent. It makes me better. The problem is that good classes are hard to find.

On google, I typed in the following questions: Anyone know of great spin instructors in the D.C. area? Who’s your favorite instructor? Best spin class in D.C.?

The search didn’t reveal much. It gave recommendations on gyms, “Try Sport & Health” but it didn’t give recommendations on specific instructors. Unlike the popular NYC blog, Rate Your Burn, there isn’t a platform for people to talk about the classes they love in the Metro D.C. area. Therefore, I’m stepping up to allow people to share their experience in my class. This will help people find me or avoid me. Every instructor ain’t for everybody. I get that now.

If you’ve taken my indoor cycling classes, I would love your feedback. Have you taken a spin class with me, Angel? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not?

    For reals. I’m a runner, not a biker. Bikes scare me, like woah. Stepping out of your 6am spin class at Revolve today, I’m not all that scared. I’m in control and you are an AMAZING motivator (hard and soft at the right times). And with a big smile, you make me want to try it again. And again. Thank you 🙂

    I live in D.C., but I spend 6 weeks in Boulder, Colorado every summer — I’m here right now and loving my last week — where I get to bike at altitude in the mountains. (More on this in a moment.)

    In the last couple of years I’ve become obsessed with wearing my heart monitor. I’m a medical writer, and a physiologist I interviewed convinced me that a fit person like me (I ran a marathon this spring! Yay me! I do sprint tris for fun! Super fantastic, me go girl! But, oh yeah, I also love wine! And cheese! And watching Girls and Louie on TV instead of a walking my dog!) who, dammit, needs to lose 5 (OK, 9) pounds and who already exercises almost daily must do this: EXERCISE AT A HIGHER INTENSITY a couple of times a week (and strength train! and, uh, eat less) if I want to replace fat with muscle. So, back to the heart monitor: Without the heart monitor on, I lie to myself about the intensity of my workouts by a magnitude of order.

    I’m posting here today because I looked back at my monitor log since I’ve been in Boulder (told you I would get back to this), and I feel like I owe it to Angel to report my sort of astonishment that after 20 rides this summer climbing regularly 1,000 feet or more with significantly less oxygen than we breathe in D.C., I have not once averaged a higher heart rate than I had in the last spin class I took with Angel in June. If you’re thinking that I am a weenie who doesn’t push herself very hard going solo, you’d be right, but that doesn’t detract from this fact as a testament to the power of an Angel class to push you far harder than you will push yourself.

    And more important still, you keep coming back to Angel classes, or I do, because she makes the hard work fun, which is the only way I can stick to it. I look forward to her classes instead of dreading them, and I think it is because she’s a natural emcee who fosters an electric group dynamic. Somehow she manages to connect you to the other riders (“Follow X! She’s your rabbit!” “Those of you with ‘big glutes’ — you know who you are!! — use them right now on this [imaginary] hill!), she plays great music, she’s really funny, and she desperately wants you to leave having accomplished something or she really, really, doesn’t feel like she has accomplished something.

    And guys, she’s lovely to look at!

    And, oh yes, as far as I can tell, her name really is Angel Stone.

    I started taking cycling classes with Angel stone about 2.5 years ago and without a doubt, she is the best instructor. Ever.

    I am inspired by her energy and enthusiasm. And she has great taste in music. Just when I think I can’t move the pedal forward even once more, Angel is there, in my head (or on the mic), pushing me to give it my all. She gives 100% to all of her classes. The hour I spend with her helps to clear my mind, lift my spirits, and gives me the confidence I need to take on the day’s challenges.

    She is truly an angel.

    I forgot to add that one of the other great things about Angel is that every class is different and equally challenging. Unlike some spin classes I have attended where the format is always basically the same, or they use the same music over and over, with Angel you can never expect the same thing of anything (except the usual suffering). Angel not only pushes herself in the actual class but she seems to challenge herself to be a better instructor. I admire that about her and it inspires me to work harder and to keep coming back for more.

    I recently attended a less than stellar spin class which made me really appreciate the great spin instructors, like Angel. When I go to a spin class I want to know that the hour I spend there will be worth my time. With Angel I know I will get a great,great workout from start to finish. She inspires me (an seemingly everyone else) to give it everything they have; and she does it in a way that is positive and puts a smile on your face (even through the suffering). Angel also demonstrates good form and is good at teaching it and helping one to find it. Her music is fantastic and she always comes completely prepared. Angel is one of the best! Thanks, Angel, for making every workout count.

    It took me approximately 1 year to even build up the courage to start attending Angel’s classes, but have been going regularly for the last 2 years. It is very apparent that Angel genuinely wants each and every participant to get something out of her spin classes. And because she cares so much, you don’t want to disappoint her in only giving it 50% or even 75% effort, but rather 110%. While she acknowledges upfront her classes are advanced, she is mindful that she’s still working with a room full of individuals with varying experiences. Her motivational words really push you outside of your comfort zone. In addition, you see her personally working so hard and you say to yourself, “well, if she’s going to work that hard, so should I!” As an endurance athlete, I personally feel very little cardio fitness scares me as I’m pretty confident I can “hang” longer than most…except when it comes to Angel’s classes. Nearly every time, I walk in the studio questioning if I am up for the challenge, but the second she starts her playlist, my fears are out the door and I’m lost in her music and motivating words.

    Angel has become the voice in my head. I’m not the work out type – but I like to eat, so I have to work out. I hate having to get up early, trudge into spin class at 6am – I’d rather be hitting the snooze and rolling over. But she’s the voice in my head. She’s the voice telling me to push harder, run faster, lift more weight. I like to argue with the voice, and at times don’t like it – but I love Angel. I’m not a spin guru – I honestly never took a class until Angel talked me into it. Getting of the bike and praying my legs didn’t give out – I was already figuring out when I could take the next class. She kicks your butt – we all need a good kick in the butt. If we didn’t – we’d all look like Angel and wouldn’t have to take spin. That would be a sad, depressing world. Take her class – and be happy. Oh – and the music is awesome and makes you go faster. It’s also her voice in my head – telling me to go faster. 😉

    Angel is a rock star. I have taken many spin classes in my life and I usually have found them boring. I know spin is a great workout so I endure. However, with Angel it’s different. I am motivated to work HARD. Her “gangsta” personality, music selections, and challenging yet fun workouts really inspire me to give my all during class. She makes the 60 minutes fly by! I will continue attending her classes and drop these unwanted lbs once and for all. Thanks Angel! You rock girl!

    I had never taken a spin class before I took one with Angel. After I took a few of hers, I was hooked so I tried some other instructors – it was NOT the same. I’ve tried several others on various occassions and none ever did it for me. The only spin classes I will take are Angel Stone’s. The music is awesome – a great mix of a variety of genres and the instruction level/intensity can’t be beat. If you are just beginning or advanced, then her class is for you. Just one thing – sign up quick as they fill up shortly after they’re announced!

    I think pretty much everyone has said everything I would say about Angel. She is the BOMB-DIGGITY! Period. If you don’t know what that means, Ubran Dictionary defines that term as “totally the awesomest, no lie”. And she is in everything she does.

    Angel pushes me to do my absolutely best. Her charm, humor, personality and drive inspire so many and I feel lucky to have found her. Side Note: If she ever moves, I might consider uprooting my entire family to follow her :). In all seriousness, her spin class is exhillerating. She cares about everyone’s individual experience and spends a lot of time putting her heart and soul into making her classes the best. Her music is fantastic and offers a wide variety to please the masses and it WILL be the best workout you’ve EVER had. Aside from her spin classes, Angel’s bootcamp and personal training sessions are also the absolute best and I’ll continue to workout with Angel as long as I can. Thanks Angel for caring and making a difference in my life!

    There is NO equal to Angel’s spin classes. They are the only classes I go to anymore for the following reasons:
    1- Her music is extremely well thought out, diverse, energetic, motivational, fun and matches the drills.
    2- The class is very intentional and designed to provide a challenging work-out to any level of participant, from a competitive cyclist/triathlete to someone looking for a good calorie burn.
    3- Angel is funny, smart, quirky, but mostly EXTREMELY motivational. It is almost impossible not to work hard for Angel.
    4- Finally, it doesn’t matter if you are “gym rat” or an occasional spinner, no one wnats to waste their time. It is very evident that Angel works very hard to make sure that EVERYONE who steps into her class gets something out of it. She will not waste your time.

    THAT IS WHY SHE IS THE BEST!

    As I sit here typing this, I can feel my muscles tightening after another sweat-drenched (and by drenched, I really mean drenched, the floors of the studio needed to be moped after), heart-pounding, calorie-annihilating spin session with Angel Stone. I started spinning with Angel nearly 3 years ago with much trepidation because honestly I had never to that point been a fan of spin. Almost all of the classes I had taken prior made me feel like a gerbil on a wheel and I was constantly eyeing the clock until the misery of boredom could end. Not with Angel. Since starting classes with her I AM nervous before hand, but only because I know I will be challenged like never before. When you feel like your body can’t possibly handle anymore, she somehow–through her awesome music tracks and inspirational commands– manages to get you to tap into that reserve that only she seems to know you had all along. I have tried taking spin classes with others (including overseas) and nothing compares to a session with Angel. I can say she is certifiably the best instructor in the Western world! (I only say Western since Angel always like to have something to strive for…so Angel–it’s time to conquer the rest of the world 😉 I used to hate to spin…I am now HOOKED. Call me addicted and Angel Stone is my supplier.

    Ugh, this is a really sensitive subject for me. Angel is SO good that she has ruined spinning for me now that I live too far to attend her classes. I’ve tried many times to find other classes but the sad, sad truth is that spinning class with anyone else is kind of miserable to me. Her ability to motivate and organize the perfect class sequence is ridiculously on point, and she obsesses over her playlists, which are phenomenal. Also, her class is excellent for riders of all levels, as long as you want to work hard and have a positive attitude. Confession – In graduate school I scheduled my classes specifically around her spin schedule. I could go on and on, but I won’t since it’s kind of depressing now that I live far away. I miss you, Angel!!!!!

    Angel rocks!!! I have taken spin classes from various teachers & Angel is truly a gem. She’s a professional triathlete so she definitely knows what she’s doing! She runs her classes using athlete-type drills, so she is constantly challenging you to push yourself beyond what you think are your limits while working just as hard right along with you. She picks awesome songs to accompany each drill, & she always brings her vibrant energy & sense of humor. All making for a tough but insanely FUN class for all levels of riders.

    I have been taking spin classes for more than 15 years. 2 to 3 classes per week. I have taken classes from all kinds of instructors. All of you reading this know that there really isn’t a bad instructor ( because it’s your ride), but some instructor are better than other. Angel is one of the best. She works hard, and expects the same from you. . That being said she patient with beginners, helpful with instruction on proper bike set up and body position to insure a productive workout. Angel has a wonderful sense of hummer and an enduring personality. Her music is fabulous.
    Whether your are a beginner or experienced spin person, you will leave Angel’s class with a smile on your face knowing that you have just had a great work out !

    Angel is hands-down the best Spin instructor I’ve ever had. I’ve been disappointed with other instructors in the past and have definitely wasted my precious gym time. Every time Angel is teaching, I make time in my schedule to go (even at 8am on Sundays)! Angel knows why we go to the gym and makes sure you are not disappointed and that you didn’t waste your time. She spends time creating her playlists, half way through class when you think you can’t go anymore, Angel puts on a song and makes you work harder. And if the music isn’t enough, Angel’s enthusiasm and voice is motivating that you can’t help but push yourself harder than you thought.

    I’ve taken several spin classes at several different gyms with several different instructors. And I can honestly say that Angel’s class has the best combination of kick-butt workout, great music and enthusiasm among both the students and the instructor. There is no slacking in her class, and you can trust that the drills she makes you do will actually *make you better* — faster, stronger, build endurance, improve your technique, etc. She’s not just bopping around on the bike. In addition, the music is great and always surprising and motivating! She spends a lot of time on her playlist, and it shows. As a triathlete, she understands the bike and the art of riding, but she also understands how to make a class FUN!

    As someone who much prefers running over cycling, I often think of
    spin classes as less of a workout and less intense than a long run.
    That is definitely not the case with Angel’s spin classes. It feels
    equally, if not more challenging, than an intense run. I have left
    each of her spin classes drenched in sweat, wondering how I just got
    through the past hour. She motivates you to reach your fullest
    potential and makes you want to come back to prove you can do even
    better. I recommend her class for any and everyone – even runners.

    I am picky when it comes to spin classes. Really picky. I have been “following” Angel for 5 years and personal train with her as well. I am confident that once you read about Angel Stone you will find that she has a cult-like following unlike any instructor in the DC area. I have tried several instructors in several gyms from Arlington to DC and haven’t found one that exudes the energy and challenge that I endure from Angel’s class. She is clear and instructional enough for a beginner to follow but will push the strongest athlete to their limit. It’s not only her carefully planned technique and knowledge but her positive attitude that pushes you to believe in yourself. It is clear that Angel puts the time and planning into her classes from the variety of exercises on the bike to the way the exercises match the exact beat of the music. She has a way of making the class fun with her humor while maintaining focus on each rider’s form and technique. Her classes are truly inspirational as well as physically and mentally fulfilling 🙂

    Angel Stone probably thinks I am stalking her. For the past 5 years, I have followed her through multiple gyms and schedules, sitting myself front and center for one of the best and efficient workouts I’ve had the privilege of experiencing. It’s not just the amazing music, or the combination of humor and inspiration as she challenges you to meet your maximum potential. She leads by example and makes you want to push harder for her as well as for yourself. You will leave her classes completely and utterly exhausted, but with a smile of satisfaction and confidence. Because honestly? If you can get through her interval sets, you will feel like you can tackle anything.

    I have been taking spin classes since they started in the DC area in the 90’s. I can count the great instructors I have had since then on one hand. Angel is one of them. It isn’t easy to find the right music to excite me to give that extra effort in each and every class. Angel has never let me down. She always gives each class 100% herself and that encourages you to do the same. Just when you think you are spent, she will lift you up with an encouraging word and take you to a new level.
