Have you ever been to a race with an impressive staff? Friendly volunteers, happy announcers, and attractive body markers. Have you ever received a bag filled with more goodies than an Oscar swag bag? A stainless steel water bottle, an itunes gift card, and free smoothie coupons. Have you ever been to a race that had more post-race grub than a $35 Sunday brunch in D.C.? Bananas, quinoa, orange juice, oreo cookies, and natural peanut butter. If so, consider yourself lucky–you found the type of race we are all looking for.

Unfortunately, not all races are created equal.

Have you ever been to a race and wondered if the staff was there as part of a court-mandated community service project? They show zero enthusiasm, they don’t know where the start line is, and they throw stuff at you when you walk by. Have you ever been on a bike course so confusing your goal shifts from winning your age group to winning the chance to see your family again? The map is outdated, the turns aren’t clearly marked, and the course changes every lap. Have you ever been to a race that served pulled pork and french fries at the finish line? (While that might be a welcome indulgence on a Friday night, that’s the last thing I want after setting a PR.)
